Nduta by Njeri – Kikuyu Rapper [Video]

Just the other day, we having a spirited discussion trying to figure out if there has been a Kenyan artist who’s rapped fully in their mother-tongues. We listed the likes of Gidi Gidi Maji Maji, Big Pin representing for the Lake Side and I guess for all those coastarians who claim Swahili to be thier native dialect; them too.

For the rest of the tribes like Kikuyu, Luhya, Kalenjin, Kamba, etc (and correct me if I’m wrong), it’s only been those late-night club anthems that get people dancing in follow-trains and circles. Just songs. No rap.

No Kikuyu rapper … until now, perhaps?

Verdict?

Yes, you may argue that STL has already rapped a few hooks in Kikuyu, and bless her for that. And yes, it was ony the 1st verse that was rapped solely in Kikuyu. But, it’s nice to see a whole verse and more done with that Kiambu voice swagger, in a very urban video setting.

I’m with it.

I hope this trend pics up with more rappers. And if there are already commercial tribe-tongued rappers out there, please let us know in the comments.
